Five-Disc Multiway Jewel Case

Riven: The Sequel to Myst holds the distinction of being the only single PlayStation game released in the PAL region with five discs. This massive adventure game required a specially adapted multiway jewel case to accommodate its storage requirements.

Physical Characteristics

The case used a standard multiway jewel case configuration, measuring the same dimensions as a typical jewel case (approximately 142mm × 125mm) but with increased thickness to accommodate multiple discs. The clear front cover displayed the game artwork, while the back showed game information and screenshots across the standard format - similar to standard multiway cases.

Interior Design

The interior featured an innovative hinged tray system that allowed for efficient storage of five discs. The front leaf disc holder was hinged on the left side (a “Smart Tray” design) and could be lifted to reveal a second disk holder on the underside. Behind this, the standard back tray held an additional three discs across two layers. This clever arrangement maximised the available space within the multiway jewel case format without requiring an entirely new case design.

Durability Issues

The five-disc case suffered from all the typical jewel case fragility issues. Over the years I have not noticed the this case was specifically more or less fragile than other multiway cases.

Historical Significance

Today, complete copies with an intact five-disc case are a little harder to find. The front leaf hinge design was only found on Riven so there are very limited copies if you’re looking for a pristine one.
