Platinum

Sony’s budget re-release programme for the PAL region, equivalent to the “Greatest Hits” label in North America. The range launched in March 1997 with six initial titles — Ridge Racer, Battle Arena Toshinden, Tekken, Air Combat, Destruction Derby and WipEout — all assigned catalogue numbers in the SCES-0000x series and released with distinctive mini jewel cases featuring a black-bordered hologram on the spine. To qualify for the range, titles initially needed to have been on sale for over a year with sales of at least 100,000 copies across Europe. The criteria were later tightened: games needed only nine months on sale, but had to have surpassed 250,000 copies sold across the PAL region. Eventually the threshold rose again to 400,000 copies. Recognised by their distinctive silver-branded packaging and spine, titles were price-capped at typically around £20 in the UK. Some Platinum releases also included minor patches over their original versions, such as bug fixes or improved loading times. The range proved immediately successful — by November 1997, one third of all PlayStation games sold in the PAL region were Platinum titles. The first six releases had collectively surpassed 4 million sales, with Tekken and Ridge Racer each reaching 200,000 individually. Notably, Air Combat sold more copies at its budget Platinum price than it had at full price.
